Alaksan Cruises: Visiting the last frontier

Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, Seward and Sitka.

No, they aren’t family nicknames – they’re ports of call you will find on your next Alaskan cruise adventure. Cruise lines, ranging from modern to luxury, all venture to the Last Frontier, providing guests an icy summer adventure among the rugged, yet breathtaking landscape of Alaska.

While many may think of Alaska as a frozen wilderness, I must say that I am impressed by how much there is to do and see there. If you have an appetite for adventure and the time to explore the Northern Pacific Northwest, here you will have the opportunity to:

  • Watch Orca and Humpback whales surface in Juneau.
  • Mush! away on a dog sledding excursion, get up close and personal to real glaciers in Glacier Bay or ride the scenic and historic White Pass Railroad through Skagway.
  • Embark on a crab fisherman’s tour, lumberjack show or historic Totem adventure in Ketchikan – The Salmon Capital of the World
  • Explore both land and marine wildlife adventures and savor local cuisine in Sitka.

Although this list is a magical display of great adventures to be had, it is only a small portion of what is in store for you when you sail to Alaska. Because this is an adventure-driven experience, casual jeans and flannel shirts are expected (not really expected but definitely acceptable) while on your cruise. Comfort clothes and all-weather coats are perfect for this vacation. Packing for an Alaskan cruise is a stark difference from the typical summer beach vacation. You will find your perception of what a cruise vacation looks like significantly altered once you step off your ship into your Alaskan ports of call.

An important tip for Alaskan cruises is to know its sailings schedule. Alaska sailing season lasts from May through September, with the peak season during the months of June and July. Popular departure ports include Seattle, Washington and Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada – where a passport will be required if you are flying in from another country).
